WHAT IS MILLINERY?

Millinery is the art of hand-blocking hats. Hand-blocking a hat requires a wooden hat form called a block, a felt or straw hat base, steam, ropes and pins.

The Selection

Every hat is custom and handmade. When you are ready to order, Kim will set up a consult via phone or video to get your measurements and confirm the shape and size of the crown and brim you prefer.

Hat Blocks

Hand blocking is a manual process, in which a hat is moulded using a hand-carved wooden mould .(as seen above) A fully saturated piece of material will be placed on top of the wooden block, then hand-stretched and moulded by the milliner. Moisture is the key to this step, and the wooden block remains inside the material for the remainder of the hat making process.

Braid sewing

Using a specialized vintage machine, all braid sewing is done in house. Two Foxes can produce any size, shape and style of hat in a variety of colors.

our CREATIVE PROCESS

STEP ONE

After Kimberly chooses the best hat blocks for your hat she wets and steams a piece of material to stretch over the blocks.

STEP TWO

The milliner uses a blocking cord placed around the crown of the hat and she pulls the material down, removing any and all air bubbles and wrinkles.

STEP THREE

Here the milliner continues to move air bubbles and wrinkles out of the shape of the brim with tacks, blocking cord and steam.

STEP FOUR

After the material cools and stiffens it comes off the block to get sewn. The edge of the brim is cut and the hat is hand sculpted by Kimberly and then sewn together using a vintage chain stitch machine.
